The JL Ranch Attractions
Utah Bird Watching
Spectacular Utah bird watching is available right outside the window of your J/L Ranch cabin. Many enhancements, such as feeding stations, nesting boxes and shrubbery have been added to attract and maintain a large variety of birds. Many songbirds such as Say's Phoebe, Lazuli Buntings and Mountain Bluebirds are here to greet you each day. Walk along the trails of Ashley National Forest which surrounds the ranch and gives access to many different bird habitats. In addition to our bird population explore the nearby Ouray National Wildlife Refuge where many songbirds, marsh birds and ducks of all varieties can be found along the Green River about 20 miles from the ranch. Just north of the ranch in the Uinta Mountains spectacular opportunities await to see mountain birds such as the Northern Goshawk, Osprey, and the Golden Eagle.
Utah Fly Fishing
Our 57,000 acre area offers over 80 Utah lakes that are host to Brook Trout, Cutthroat Trout and some Golden Trout. Some lakes offer Brookies up to 3 1/2 lbs., and Cutthroat up to 5 lbs. Float tubes are best for trophy fishing with spin casting gear or flies. We have several miles of small streams for the avid fly-fisherman. These wild and fast streams yield smaller fish of 8-12 inches, but are a fun challenge. The upper reaches of the Uintah and the Whiterocks River, nearby the ranch, offer the sportsman a variety of angling opportunities for Brook, Rainbow and Cutthroat trout. The lower waters of these rivers offer very nice German Browns on Ute Indian Tribal Lands and special permits can be purchased to access these very private stretches of river. The Green River, below Flaming Gorge Dam is a leading blue ribbon fishery for large Rainbow, German Brown, Cutthroat, and Cut-Bow hybrids. We can help you arrange a guided fishing trip with some of the best dory boat guides on the Green. Utah Fly Fishing guides can be furnished for any fishing location and fly casting lessons are available upon request. We promote catch and release fishing.
For the serious fly fishermen we offer two private ponds for fee fishing/catch and release. These ponds yield 10 pound Rainbows and large Brook Trout. We do not provide fishing equipment, but we have an excellent fly shop in Vernal and rentals and instructors are available upon early request.
We offer furnished drop camps and packing service for self-guided Archery Elk and Mule Deer hunts. These are remote, high country camps. Fully guided Moose, Rocky Mountain Goat and rifle Elk hunts are available. Call and talk to Joe about costs and availability.
Fully guided Elk and Mule Deer hunts are also available in Western Colorado.
Local Area Attractions
There is a wide variety of thing to see and explore in the area. We are in a remote area, surrounded by National Forest so there are many places to hike, fish, and bicycle. River rafting is quite popular on the Green And Yampa Rivers. We can help you choose a River Company if you would like to try a float trip. Vernal is famous for the Dinosaur National Monument and Quarry, just east of town. Self-guided tours of Indian Petroglyphs are also near by. The area is also famous for Butch Cassidy and other notorious outlaw gang members who sought refuge from the law in this wild country.Let us know if we can help you plan your time while in our area.
